The Only Prayer Needed
If the only prayer you said in your whole life was thank you, that would suffice.
Eckhart was a Dominican friar and mystic who preached directly to laypeople and nuns in the vernacular, stripping away complicated theology to get at the heart of the matter. He lived in a time of plague, political upheaval, and deep anxiety about salvation, yet he kept returning to a simple idea: God is already present, already given, already here. Gratitude, for Eckhart, was not one devotion among many but the whole of devotion, because to truly see what you have been given is to see God. This morning, before any plans or problems crowd in, it is worth remembering that thanks alone can be a complete prayer.
Reflection
Eckhart believed one grateful word could hold an entire prayer. What do I already have today that I once only hoped for?
