You Are A World

Humanity, take a good look at yourself. Inside, you've got heaven and earth, and all of creation. You're a world - everything is hidden in you.

Hildegard wrote these words in her sixties, as abbess of the Rupertsberg monastery, setting down the visions that had guided her for decades into her final great theological work. She had spent a lifetime insisting, often against resistance from church authorities, that her visions carried real spiritual weight despite being a woman with no formal theological training. This passage captures her conviction that the divine order of the universe is not only something to observe outside oneself but something already present within each person. For Hildegard, purpose was never abstract; it was found by paying attention to the vast inner life each person already carries.
