Break The Shell
If you want the kernel, you must break the shell.
Meister Eckhart, the German Dominican preacher and mystic, offered this image in his vernacular sermons to ordinary people in the early 1300s, men and women trying to live a contemplative life while still doing the work of the world. He was pushing listeners past the easy surface of scripture, and past the easy surface of their own hardships, toward what actually sustains a person. Years after his death, church authorities condemned parts of his teaching as dangerous, yet this particular insight held up: the hard outer layer is not separate from the good inside it, it is often the very thing that gets you there. For anyone bracing for a difficult day, it reframes the difficulty itself as the shell, not the obstacle to the point but the way to it.
Reflection
Eckhart's image points to the idea that what matters most lies past some discomfort. What small step can I take today to get past the hard part?
