Keep Humming In The Dark
Hope means to keep living amid desperation and to keep humming in the darkness.
Henri Nouwen wrote these words in 1972 in The Wounded Healer, after years of watching ministers, teachers, and professionals burn out trying to fix a world in crisis. He wrote against the backdrop of the Vietnam War and campus unrest, when a whole generation measured its work by visible, immediate results. Nouwen argued that hope is not the same as optimism: optimism needs evidence that things are improving, while hope can keep going without any. That distinction is the whole discipline of patience and persistence, because it frees the slow, repeated work of showing up from needing proof that it is succeeding.
Reflection
Nouwen believed persistence does not require evidence of success. What is one small thing I will keep doing today without evidence it's working?
