Offer Nothing But Yourself
The Christian leader of the future is called to be completely irrelevant and to stand in this world with nothing to offer but his or her own vulnerable self.
Henri Nouwen wrote these words in 1972, near the close of The Wounded Healer, while teaching young ministers at Yale. The world around him was shifting fast — institutions losing credibility, congregations shrinking, and helpers burning out trying to prove their expertise. Nouwen argued that the future did not belong to those with the most credentials but to those willing to be known, flaws and all. His point still lands: in a culture built on curated profiles and professional polish, the deepest trust still comes from someone willing to be plainly, unguardedly themselves.
Reflection
Nouwen believed real connection begins when one sets aside the mask of competence. Where today can I show up as myself instead of the role I usually play?
