Tecumseh was the Shawnee leader who spent his final years riding from village to village trying to unite the tribes against the steady advance of American settlement. This teaching comes from counsel he was known to give warriors and young people on how to live well even amid war and uncertainty. Rather than urging conquest or accumulation, he pointed them back to the life already in front of them, the one thing fully within their control. It speaks to simplicity today because it asks us to tend the ordinary and immediate rather than chase what is distant or imagined.
