What Tomorrow Is For
If you are not going to be better tomorrow than you are today, then why do you need tomorrow?
Rabbi Nachman, great-grandson of the Baal Shem Tov, founded the Breslov Hasidic movement in Ukraine in the late 1700s and died of tuberculosis in 1810 at only thirty-eight. He knew his years were short, and much of his teaching to his followers carried the urgency of a man counting his days rather than assuming he had many left. This saying, passed down by his student Rabbi Nathan, reframes legacy as something built one day at a time rather than left behind in a single grand act. It asks a simple, unsettling question: if today looks exactly like yesterday, what was the point of being given another one?
Reflection
Rabbi Nachman measured a life by daily change rather than by years accumulated. What is one small way I will be better today than I was yesterday?
