More Than You Know
Man is more than he can know of himself.
Karl Jaspers wrote this line in his three-volume work Philosophy, published in 1932, just as the Weimar Republic was collapsing and the Nazi party was rising to power. Within a year he would be forced from his teaching post at Heidelberg because his wife, Gertrud, was Jewish, and the two would live for over a decade under the threat of deportation. In that climate of political chaos and personal danger, Jaspers insisted that a person is never a finished, fully knowable object but an open process of becoming. The line steadies a reader today because it lifts the pressure of needing total self-certainty before moving calmly through the day.
Reflection
Jaspers saw self-knowledge as an unfinished journey rather than a fixed fact. Where can I meet myself today with patience instead of a final verdict?
