The Road Has No End

Philosophy means to be on the way. Its questions are more essential than its answers, and every answer becomes a new question.

Karl Jaspers wrote these words in 1950 in Way to Wisdom, a book built from radio lectures he gave in Basel after World War II. He had spent the war years silenced in Germany, barred from teaching because his wife Gertrud was Jewish, watching the intellectual world he loved collapse into ruins. When peace returned he offered readers no finished system of thought but an invitation to keep walking, since he had seen how quickly certainties turn to rubble. His insistence that every answer only opens a new question reminds us that nothing we grasp today, not even our conclusions, is meant to be final.
