The Quiet Danger Of Fitting In
The opposite of courage in our society is not cowardice, it is conformity.
Rollo May wrote these words in 1975, after decades as a practicing psychotherapist watching patients suffer not from external threats but from the slow erosion of their own convictions. He had lived through a century of mass movements and organizational life, where going along with the crowd often felt safer than standing apart from it. May argued that real courage shows up less in dramatic danger and more in the daily choice to think and act as oneself when everyone around you is doing otherwise. That distinction still cuts close today, when algorithms and group opinion make blending in easier than ever.
Reflection
Rollo May warned that fitting in quietly can be its own kind of surrender. Where today can I choose my own view instead of the group's?
