The Idea That Saves You
Though the physicality of death destroys us, the idea of death saves us.
Irvin Yalom wrote this in Staring at the Sun, a book shaped by decades of sitting with dying patients and by his own long reckoning with mortality. He built his entire approach to therapy around the idea that confronting life's hardest facts — death, isolation, meaninglessness, and freedom — is what finally lets people stop living on autopilot. For Yalom, the thought of death is not morbid; it is the jolt that strips away the fiction of unlimited time and hands a person back the authorship of their own choices. Once that illusion of endless days breaks, what remains is the freedom to decide, deliberately, how this one day gets used.
Reflection
Yalom believed that truly facing death restores a person's freedom to choose. What is one decision today that is truly mine to make?
