Deal More Kindly
It underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.
In 1990, Sagan convinced NASA to turn Voyager 1's camera back toward Earth from 3.7 billion miles away, capturing the planet as a single pale speck suspended in a sunbeam. He wrote this passage years later, reflecting on what that image meant for a species so prone to war and division. Seeing every human triumph and tragedy compressed onto one dot stripped away his patience for cruelty and grandiosity. The lesson he drew was not despair but tenderness, a case for kindness as the only sane response to our shared smallness.
Reflection
Sagan saw the Voyager photograph as a call to gentleness rather than conquest. Who can I treat more kindly today?
