The Body's Hidden Herd
The body is a great reason, a plurality with one sense, a war and a peace, a herd and a herdsman.
Zarathustra speaks these words to the 'despisers of the body,' those who follow the old habit of splitting the self into a lowly body and a noble soul. Nietzsche wrote this in 1883 while rejecting centuries of Platonic and Christian thought that ranked spirit above flesh. He insists instead that what we call reason, spirit, and self are not single things but a community of drives, instincts, and impulses working in concert, like a herd following its own herdsman. The image still holds today: nothing in us, or around us, acts alone.
Reflection
Nietzsche believed the body holds many drives working together as a single whole. What is one thing I can do today to honor that connection?
