Eternity Is Now
Eternity isn't some later time. Eternity isn't a long time. Eternity has nothing to do with time. Eternity is that dimension of here and now that all thinking in temporal terms cuts off. And if you don't get it here, you won't get it anywhere.
Campbell spoke these words to Bill Moyers during the interviews filmed at Skywalker Ranch, released as The Power of Myth shortly after his death in 1987. He was nearly eighty, having spent a lifetime studying how cultures everywhere make peace with death, and he kept circling back to one insight: eternity is not a reward stored up for later, it is a quality of attention available right now. He had watched students and readers spend their lives chasing achievement as a hedge against mortality, and he wanted them to see that the only legacy worth building is a life actually inhabited while you are living it. The line still cuts against our habit of treating today as a rehearsal for some more important day ahead.
Reflection
Campbell insisted eternity is not a prize waiting in the future. What is one task today where I can be fully present?
