The Unseen Piper

Everything is determined, the beginning as well as the end, by forces over which we have no control. It is determined for the insect, as well as for the star. Human beings, vegetables, or cosmic dust, we all dance to a mysterious tune, intoned in the distance by an invisible piper.

Einstein wrote this in the early 1930s, at the height of his fame after relativity had reordered humanity's picture of the universe, yet here he turns from equations toward something closer to faith. Europe was sliding toward crisis, and Einstein himself would soon be forced to flee Germany, his life reshaped by forces far beyond his own choosing. Even the man who unlocked the secrets of space and time admitted he could not command the deeper order moving through it. His words offer a scientist's version of surrender, not passive resignation but a kind of ease found in trusting what cannot be controlled.
