Grace Finds You
The Thou meets me through grace—it is not found by seeking.
Buber wrote these words in 1923, in a Germany reeling from war and uncertain of its future, while he was deep in his study of Hasidic tales and the nature of genuine human encounter. He argued that the I-Thou relation, the moment of real meeting between people, cannot be manufactured by will or technique. It comes, when it comes, as something given rather than taken. For a world that prizes hustle and control, this is a quiet correction: some of the best things cannot be forced into being, only received when they arrive.
Reflection
Buber believed real connection arrives through grace not effort. What can I simply receive today instead of trying to control it?
