When Thou Becomes It

This is the exalted melancholy of our fate, that every Thou in our world must become an It.

Martin Buber published I and Thou in 1923, in a Europe still counting its dead from the first World War, when nearly every family understood absence firsthand. Buber knew loss early and personally: his mother left when he was a small child, and the wound of that separation shaped his entire philosophy of relation. In the book, he draws a sharp line between two ways of meeting the world - the living, present relation he calls I-Thou, and the fixed, distant world of I-It. Grief, in his framework, is what happens when someone who was once fully present to us - alive, immediate, irreducible - settles into memory, becomes fixed, becomes an It.
