All real living is meeting.
Buber wrote this in 1923, during a period of deep personal crisis following a mystical experience he later felt he had mishandled. A young man had come to him seeking real conversation, and Buber was present in body but absent in spirit, too caught up in his own inner state to genuinely meet him. The man later died, and Buber carried that. This idea that we only become fully ourselves in genuine encounter with another person cuts directly against the modern instinct to find identity through solitude, self-optimization, or personal branding.
Reflection
Identity is not something you build alone in private. Which specific relationship in your life right now is asking you to show up more honestly?
