The Simplest Question
The love of our neighbor in all its fullness simply means being able to say to him, 'What are you going through?'
Simone Weil wrote this during her final years, while teaching, working alongside laborers, and studying how attention is trained through ordinary discipline. In her essay on the right use of school studies, she argued that years of careful, patient focus teach the mind a kind of attention that can then be turned toward people in need. She insisted that loving someone is not a feeling or a grand gesture but the plain act of noticing their suffering and asking about it directly. In a world quick to offer advice or solutions, her words return us to something simpler: just ask, and listen.
Reflection
Weil believed real love often starts with one honest question, not a solution. Who in my life could I ask this simple question today?
