Tip The World's Scale

Each person should always look upon himself as evenly balanced between merit and guilt, and the world as evenly balanced between merit and guilt. If he performs one more mitzvah, he tips the scale for himself and for the entire world to the side of merit, and brings deliverance and salvation to himself and to the world.

— Maimonides, Mishneh Torah, Laws of Repentance 3:4

Maimonides wrote this as a physician and rabbi in twelfth-century Egypt, codifying Jewish law for a scattered people who needed practical guidance more than abstract theology. In this passage from his Laws of Repentance, he asks the ordinary person to picture both themselves and the entire world hanging in perfect balance between merit and guilt at every moment. One more good deed, he insists, does not just help the person who does it — it tips the scale for everyone. It is a strikingly concrete way of saying that no one acts alone, that private choices are never really private.

Reflection

Maimonides insisted that no action stays private because it always shifts something larger. What small act can I choose today that tips the balance toward good?
