Bear Witness For The Dead

To forget the dead would be akin to killing them a second time.

Elie Wiesel wrote these words in the preface to the 2006 edition of Night, decades after he survived Auschwitz and Buchenwald as a teenager. By then he had spent a lifetime writing, teaching, and speaking about the Holocaust, work that eventually earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986. He explains that the survivor's duty is to testify, because silence would let the six million he lost disappear a second time, first in the camps and then in the world's forgetting. For Wiesel, purpose was not something he stumbled into but something he built out of obligation to people who could no longer speak for themselves.
