Ready For Responsibility

Action springs not from thought, but from a readiness for responsibility.

Bonhoeffer wrote these lines in 1944 while imprisoned at Tegel for his role in the German resistance against Hitler, part of a poem called 'Stations on the Road to Freedom' sent to his friend Eberhard Bethge. Awaiting an uncertain fate, he had spent years arguing that faith without action was empty, and his own life had become proof of that conviction. He insists that responsibility is not the reward of careful deliberation but the very ground on which real action stands. For anyone weighing how to contribute today, his words cut through hesitation and point straight at the task in front of them.

Reflection

Bonhoeffer believed action begins with taking on responsibility rather than waiting to feel prepared. What responsibility can I step into today without waiting to feel ready?
