A Donkey Loaded With Books

The scholar who has not tasted love is nothing but a donkey loaded with books.

Sultan Bahu was a seventeenth-century Punjabi Sufi mystic and poet who wrote most of his teachings in short, plainspoken couplets meant to be sung and remembered by ordinary people, not scholars. He lived in a region and era thick with religious debate, where formal study of the Quran and Islamic law was prized as the mark of piety. Bahu challenged that hierarchy, insisting that memorized knowledge without inner transformation was worthless, a criticism aimed at clerics who could recite endlessly but had never examined their own hearts. His point still matters today: discernment isn't about how much information a person holds but whether that information has changed how they live and love.

Reflection

Sultan Bahu drew a sharp line between memorized facts and real understanding. What is one thing I already know that I haven't yet lived out?
