Make Every Breath Count
Every breath drawn without the remembrance of God is a dead breath.
Sultan Bahu was a seventeenth-century Punjabi Sufi mystic who founded the Sarwari Qadiri order and wrote more than a hundred works, most in Persian, alongside his famous Punjabi couplets. He taught farmers, soldiers, and scholars alike that holiness was not proven by a patched cloak or a long prayer but by what filled a person's mind in the space of a single breath. His central practice, zikr-e-pas anfas, asked followers to carry remembrance into every inhale and exhale rather than saving devotion for formal ritual alone. The teaching speaks to integrity now because real character shows up not in rare public moments but in the thousands of small private ones that make up an ordinary day.
Reflection
Sultan Bahu taught that true virtue lives in constant small acts not grand gestures. What is one small act today where I can practice real sincerity?
