The time of business does not with me differ from the time of prayer; and in the noise and clatter of my kitchen, while several persons are at the same time calling for different things, I possess God in as great tranquillity as if I were upon my knees at the Blessed Sacrament.
Brother Lawrence, born Nicolas Herman, was a lay brother who spent most of his life working in the kitchen of a Carmelite monastery in Paris. He had no formal theological training and considered himself unfit for the grand devotions practiced by other monks, yet he wrote letters describing how he found God fully present amid the pots, the fire, and the shouted orders of a busy kitchen. This line comes from one of those letters, written to a fellow believer who asked how to pray without ceasing. It speaks to gratitude today because it shows that thankfulness does not wait for stillness or ceremony but can be found in the middle of ordinary, noisy work.
Reflection
Brother Lawrence found the same joy in kitchen work as in formal prayer. What small task today can I do with quiet gratitude?
