What You'll Do Forever

I am doing now what I shall do through all eternity. I am blessing God, praising Him, adoring Him, and loving Him with all my heart.

Brother Lawrence spent most of his life as a lay brother in a Carmelite monastery in Paris, scrubbing pots and mending sandals in the kitchen, a life the world would call small and forgettable. He spoke these words near the end of his life, as his health failed and death drew close, reflecting on the decades he had spent training himself to feel God's presence in the most ordinary tasks. He did not fear dying because he was not starting something new; he believed he was simply continuing the same practice he had built his whole life around. His example suggests that legacy is not made of grand achievements remembered by others but of the quality of attention we bring to the small, repeated work of an ordinary day.
