Make Today Your Center
The universe has its center everywhere and its circumference nowhere.
Nicholas of Cusa was a fifteenth-century cardinal and philosopher who wrote On Learned Ignorance in 1440, more than a century before Copernicus dared to move the earth from the center of the cosmos. Medieval thinkers assumed the universe had one fixed middle point and one fixed outer boundary; Cusa broke with that picture, arguing that since only God is truly infinite, the created universe has no single privileged center. If every place can be regarded as a center, then no spot is more sanctioned to start from than any other. That is worth remembering on a morning when the day ahead still feels like it needs the right conditions before it can begin.
Reflection
Cusa taught that any point in the universe can serve as its center. What is one thing I can begin today without waiting for a better moment?
