The universe is a contracted absolute, and each thing is the universe contracted to that thing.

— Nicholas of Cusa, On Learned Ignorance

Nicholas of Cusa wrote this in 1440, a German cardinal working at a time when Europe was fractured by church schism and political rivalry. He was trying to articulate why no single institution, nation, or person could claim to hold the whole truth about God or reality. His argument was that every individual thing genuinely contains the whole, not as a metaphor, but as a structural fact about how existence works. That idea cuts directly against the feeling that you have to earn your place in a community or prove you belong before you can contribute.

Reflection

Cusa believed every person already carries the whole within them. Is there someone in your life you have been treating as less essential than they actually are?
