Notice Your Ripples
Rippling refers to the fact that each of us creates — often without our conscious intent or knowledge — concentric circles of influence that may affect others for years, even generations.
Irvin Yalom developed the idea of rippling in Staring at the Sun after decades spent sitting with dying patients at Stanford, watching many of them search for meaning outside any promise of an afterlife. He noticed that what comforted people most was not certainty about what comes next, but curiosity about how their ordinary words and gestures kept traveling through other lives long after the moment had passed. A teacher's offhand encouragement, a stranger's patience, a parent's habit of humor - these things spread outward in circles the original person never gets to witness. Yalom offers rippling as something to wonder about rather than mourn, an invitation to notice how far a single small act can travel.
Reflection
Yalom believed most personal influence happens outside conscious awareness. Which person on my calendar today might carry forward something small I say?
