The Open Future

There is no justification for present existence other than its expansion into an indefinitely open future.

Simone de Beauvoir wrote these words in 1947, in The Ethics of Ambiguity, trying to build a workable ethics out of the ashes of a war that had just shown how fragile human plans could be. She argues that a life sealed off from what might still happen is already a finished life, while a life that keeps reaching toward the unknown stays alive with possibility. This is her case for curiosity: not vague cheerfulness about tomorrow, but a disciplined refusal to treat the present moment as the final word. For Beauvoir, wonder is not passive awe but the active decision to keep the door open to what you don't yet know.

Reflection

Beauvoir believed existence only matters when it moves toward what is not yet decided. What is one open possibility I can step toward today?
