The Only Wealth That's Yours
You have nothing. You possess nothing. You own nothing. You are free. All you have is what you are, and what you give.
Shevek is a physicist from the anarchist moon Anarres, visiting the propertied, hierarchical world of Urras where money and ownership define a person's worth. Standing before a crowd of striking laborers who have nothing to lose, he speaks not of revolution as strategy but as spirit, insisting that freedom begins the moment you stop measuring your life by what you own. Le Guin wrote this while deeply immersed in anarchist thought, building a character whose upbringing had stripped wealth of its usual meaning entirely. The line matters for gratitude because it locates richness not in acquisition but in what a person already is and already gives.
Reflection
Shevek measured wealth not in possessions but in what one could give. What do I already have to give someone today?
