Create The Space For Growth

If I can create a certain type of relationship with another person, he will discover within himself the capacity to use that relationship for growth, and change and personal development will occur.

Carl Rogers wrote this after decades as a therapist and teacher, watching what actually helped people change and what did not. He found that advice and clever interpretations rarely worked, but a certain quality of presence often did. On Becoming a Person, published in 1961, gathered this hard-won understanding into a simple claim: our job is not to fix people but to offer a relationship steady enough for them to find their own way. It is a quiet, practical form of service, one that asks less performance and more presence.

Reflection

Rogers believed real change grows from the relationship itself rather than advice. Who in my life today could use that kind of steady presence from me?
