Two Are One

Light is the left hand of darkness and darkness the left hand of light. Two are one, life and death, lying together like lovers in kemmer, like hands joined together, like the end and the way.

In The Left Hand of Darkness, Therem Harth rem ir Estraven recites this verse from the Handdara, an ancient religious tradition on the planet Gethen built around embracing paradox rather than resolving it. Le Guin wrote the novel in 1969, during a Cold War climate obsessed with binary thinking—East versus West, male versus female, self versus other. The Handdarata teach that opposites are not enemies but partners, each defined by and dependent on the other, the way a hand needs its opposite to be whole. It's a reminder that the connections we most want to sever—between people, ideas, or parts of ourselves—may be exactly what holds the whole together.
