The major problems in the world are the result of the difference between how nature works and the way people think.

— Gregory Bateson, Steps to an Ecology of Mind

Bateson wrote this in the late 1960s and early 1970s, a period when he was watching industrial civilization accelerate in ways he believed were fundamentally misaligned with biological reality. He had spent decades moving between anthropology, cybernetics, psychiatry, and evolutionary theory, and what troubled him most was not any single crisis but the thinking pattern underneath them all. For Bateson, identity becomes inauthentic the moment you believe you are separate from the systems you live inside. He saw most human suffering as a consequence of that specific mistake.

Reflection

Most of us learned to think of ourselves as individuals acting on the world, not as parts of it. Which relationship in your life are you managing as a problem to solve rather than a system you belong to?
