Sell Your Cleverness
Sell your cleverness and buy bewilderment.
Rumi, the thirteenth-century Persian poet and Sufi mystic, composed the Masnavi over decades in Konya as a long teaching poem meant to be studied line by line. This couplet captures his central warning that the mind's confident cleverness, its quick categorizing and certainty, can actually block real understanding. Rumi had lived this truth himself after meeting the wandering mystic Shams-e Tabrizi, whose presence dismantled his scholarly certainties and taught him that wisdom often begins in not-knowing. The line still cuts today, reminding us that discernment is less about having every answer and more about the humility to sit inside a real question.
Reflection
Rumi prized honest confusion over false certainty as the doorway to real understanding. Where in my plans today could I trade quick certainty for honest not-knowing?
