The Door Is Already Open

Why do you stay in prison when the door is so wide open?

Rumi was a respected Islamic scholar and jurist in Konya, living a disciplined and orderly life, until he met the wandering mystic Shams-e Tabrizi, who upended everything he thought he knew about faith and freedom. This line comes from that turbulent, transformative period, when Rumi began to see how much of his own confinement was self-made rather than imposed by others. He is not talking about literal prisons but the ones built from fear, duty, and old habits of thinking. It speaks to autonomy today because it refuses the idea that freedom must be earned or granted later; it insists the way out is already there, waiting for someone to walk through it.
