Give Rather Than Acquire

There is a realm of time where the goal is not to have but to be, not to own but to give, not to control but to share, not to subdue but to be in accord.

Heschel wrote The Sabbath in 1951, only a few years after fleeing Nazi Europe and losing his mother and sisters in the Holocaust, confronting an America increasingly defined by machines, consumption, and the drive to possess things. He contrasts a civilization of space, which measures worth by what we own and control, with a civilization of time, which measures worth by what we give and share. For Heschel, true service begins the moment we stop asking what we can acquire and start asking what we can offer. That shift, from having to giving, is what he saw as the deepest form of contribution to others.

Reflection

Heschel measured a life by what it gave rather than what it gathered. Where can I give instead of acquire today?
