The Greatest Danger
Fortitude strengthens man's mind against the greatest danger, which is that of death.
Aquinas wrote this in the Summa Theologica during the 1260s and 70s, in his treatise on the cardinal virtues, placing fortitude alongside prudence, justice, and temperance. For Aquinas, fortitude was not recklessness but the firmness of mind that allows a person to act rightly even when facing the worst fear a human being can know. He drew on Aristotle but pushed further, arguing that true courage is always ordered toward the good, not toward danger for its own sake. The teaching still matters because most of what unsettles us today is a smaller version of that same fear, and the same firmness is what carries us through it.
Reflection
Aquinas believed true courage shows itself not in the absence of fear but in standing firm despite it. What is one difficult task on my calendar today that I can face with steady resolve?
