No Dominion Over You

Wherever his spirit appears, the oppressed gather fresh courage, for he announced the good news that fear, hypocrisy, and hatred, the three hounds of hell that track the trail of the disinherited, need have no dominion over them.

Thurman wrote this closing line in 1949, after years of pastoral work among Black Americans living under segregation and a 1935 meeting with Gandhi, who pressed him on what nonviolent resistance could mean for the American racial struggle. He named fear, hypocrisy, and hatred as the three forces that keep the suffering bound to their suffering, calling them the hounds of hell that track the disinherited wherever they go. His claim was radical: those forces can be outrun, not by escaping hardship but by refusing to let it decide who a person becomes. That is the whole of his theology of transformation compressed into one sentence.
