Morning Meditation

Don't ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.

— Howard Thurman, The Living Wisdom of Howard Thurman

This quote is widely attributed to Thurman and reflects the core argument he developed across his life's work, including The Inward Journey, where he pressed readers to locate their deepest vitality rather than simply respond to external demands. Thurman wrote during the mid-twentieth century, when Black Americans were being told in countless ways that their role was to adapt downward, to shrink, to survive by disappearing. His response was to insist that genuine change in the world begins not with strategy or sacrifice but with a person doing the hard work of finding out what actually sustains them. That inversion is exactly what makes this relevant to anyone facing a moment of transition, because it redirects the question from what you should do to what you already know is true about yourself.

Reflection

Think about a change you are currently facing at work, at home, or in a relationship. Which parts of that change are you resisting because they feel wrong, and which parts are you resisting simply out of habit?
