Become The Hollow Flute

I am a hole in a flute that the Christ's breath moves through—listen to this music.

Hafiz was a fourteenth-century Persian poet who spent nearly his whole life in Shiraz, refusing invitations to grander courts because he trusted the small, devoted life he had built there. He wrote from deep inside the Sufi path, a practice built on dissolving the grip of the ego so that something larger than the self could move freely through a person. This line, rendered into English by Daniel Ladinsky, pictures the poet not as the source of his own beauty but as an emptied-out instrument that love breathes through. It is a teaching about surrender that has nothing to do with giving up and everything to do with getting your own noise out of the way.

Reflection

Hafiz did not take credit for the music, only for the emptiness that allowed it to pass through him. What can I let go of trying to control today?
