The Two Halves Of Faith

Patience is one part of the faith, and the other is gratitude.

Al-Ghazali, Ihya Ulum al-Din (Revival of the Religious Sciences)

Al-Ghazali wrote this in the Book of Patience and Thankfulness, part of his great work composed after he walked away from a prestigious teaching post in Baghdad to search for a sincerity his public life had lost. Having weighed knowledge against certainty and found much of his scholarship hollow, he came to see faith as resting on two legs: patience through hardship and gratitude through ease. He insisted neither one works alone, since a life of endurance without appreciation grows bitter, and appreciation without endurance grows fragile at the first setback. It is a plain, practical measure for anyone trying to hold steady through a long or difficult stretch of days.

Reflection

Al-Ghazali taught that patience is half of what makes faith complete. What is one difficulty today I can meet with patience instead of frustration?
