Where Your Mind Lives
Wherever a man's thoughts are, there he is entirely.
The Baal Shem Tov, Rabbi Israel ben Eliezer, founded the Hasidic movement among the farmers and tradesmen of eighteenth-century Podolia, teaching that closeness to God required sincerity of attention more than scholarly mastery. He taught that the true measure of a person is not their physical location but the place their mind actually occupies at any given moment. This was a teaching of discernment: a person could stand in prayer while their thoughts wandered to business, or scrub a pot while their thoughts stayed fixed on the sacred. It remains a sharp test for anyone trying to tell the difference between where they are and where they only appear to be.
Reflection
The Baal Shem Tov taught that a person lives wherever their thoughts are directed. Where do I want my mind to stay as I start today?
