Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you, all things are passing away: God never changes.
Teresa wrote this in sixteenth-century Spain while reforming the Carmelite order — a project that brought her years of opposition from church officials, her own sisters, and the Inquisition itself. She was not writing from a place of calm. She was writing from the middle of exhausting conflict with people she could not escape. The line speaks to forgiveness and release because it locates stability not in resolving every grievance, but in recognizing that the grievance, and the person who caused it, are not permanent fixtures around which your whole life must be organized.
Reflection
Think about one specific person you have not fully forgiven. What would change in your daily life if you stopped waiting for them to apologize first?
