The Wisdom of Stillness
I like for you to be still: it is as though you were absent.
Neruda wrote this line in 1924 at just nineteen years old, in a Chile still shaping his voice as a poet of desire and distance. The poem turns on a paradox: he loves his beloved most when she is quiet, when her noise and immediate presence fall away and something truer becomes visible. That is a kind of discernment, learning to separate the surface of a person or moment from what is actually there. It is a reminder that clear seeing often requires quiet, not more talking or more motion.
Reflection
Neruda found that real understanding often begins in stillness rather than noise. Where today can I choose quiet attention before reacting?
