Take In, Stay Rooted

To assimilate, not to be assimilated

Senghor wrote this as the leading poet-philosopher of the Négritude movement and later as Senegal's first president, defending a vision he called the civilization of the universal - a world enriched by the meeting of all cultures. He used the phrase to describe his own relationship to the French language and European thought: he wanted to take in what was useful without losing what made him African. Having studied in French schools and later been held as a prisoner of war in France, Senghor had seen both the violence of forced assimilation and the real gifts of cross-cultural exchange. His formula points to a kind of active acceptance - taking in what the world offers while holding firmly to who you are.

Reflection

Senghor believed in taking in new ideas without losing one's own identity. What is one new idea or influence I can accept today without losing my own identity?
