See It As Your Own
We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It's easy to say, 'It's not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.' Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes.
Fred Rogers spent over three decades on Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, speaking directly and quietly to children about kindness, feelings, and what it means to belong to one another. By the time he wrote these words, he had spent a lifetime watching communities thrive or crumble based on whether people claimed each other as their own concern. He wasn't talking about grand heroics but about the ordinary choice to stop drawing lines around what counts as 'mine' to care for. In a world full of reasons to look away from problems that aren't technically ours, his quiet insistence that community means shared responsibility still cuts through.
Reflection
Fred Rogers believed real belonging means treating someone else's need as one's own. What is one need in my neighborhood I can treat as my own today?
