Belonging Isn't Sameness

Without community, there is no liberation, only the most vulnerable and temporary armistice between an individual and her oppression. But community must not mean a shedding of our differences, nor the pathetic pretense that these differences do not exist.

Audre Lorde delivered this line in 1980 as part of her essay 'Age, Race, Class, and Sex: Women Redefining Difference,' later collected in Sister Outsider. She was speaking to a feminist movement that often asked women of color, lesbians, and the poor to set aside their specific struggles for the sake of a unified sisterhood. Lorde pushed back, insisting that any unity built on erasing real differences was fragile and temporary, not true liberation. Her words remain a guide for anyone building community today, reminding us that belonging grows stronger when it makes room for what makes each person distinct.

Reflection

Lorde insisted true community makes room for real differences among its members. Where can I welcome someone's difference today instead of smoothing it over?
