The Purpose Beneath Your Work
Your inner purpose is to awaken. It is as simple as that.
Tolle wrote this in A New Earth, his follow-up to The Power of Now, at a time when self-help culture was consumed with finding the right career or life mission. He draws a line between outer purpose, the goals and roles that fill a resume, and inner purpose, the quiet work of becoming conscious in whatever you are already doing. For Tolle, a person can achieve every outer goal and still feel empty if the inner purpose is ignored. The distinction matters today because it separates the question of what to do with your life from the deeper question of how present you are while doing it.
Reflection
Tolle argues that awakening matters more than any specific task on the calendar. What one task today can I do with complete presence?
