Claim Your Freed Self
Freeing yourself was one thing; claiming ownership of that freed self was another.
This thought comes to Paul D near the end of Beloved, as he tries to imagine a future with Sethe unshaped by the horrors of Sweet Home. Morrison wrote the novel in 1987, drawing on the true story of Margaret Garner, to show how survivors of slavery had to learn selfhood as much as they had to escape captivity. Paul D realizes that being physically free did not automatically grant him the right to want, to love, or to claim a future for himself. That distinction between escape and ownership speaks directly to what it means to begin again: waking up is not enough, you have to decide the day is yours.
Reflection
Freedom from yesterday does not automatically hand a person today. What small step can I take this morning to claim this day as my own?
